Laser Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are one of the most common causes of correctable vision loss today. Cataract surgery has changed dramatically over the last 20 years and for the first time, patients have access to a customized laser treatment for cataracts.  The Catalys Precision Laser System offers tailored treatment to each individual’s eye, making the experience better for patients and enhancing the accuracy and visual results.

WHAT IS LASER CATARACT SURGERY?

The role of femtosecond lasers in cataract surgery is to assist or replace many of the steps of traditional cataract surgery performed using handheld tools. Using the Catalys Precision Laser System, your BVA surgeon can offer you unprecedented accuracy and customization in your cataract surgery procedure by utilizing the precision of a laser.

The advantages are especially evident when it comes to premium implants, such as presbyopia-correcting multifocal IOLs and accommodating IOLs. The advantages can include better lens placement and therefore more accurate visual outcomes. Every eye has a unique size and shape. Prior to treatment, the laser system scans your eye to create a precise 3D map of relevant structures. This process enables the surgeon to create a treatment plan that is tailored for your eye.

How is Laser Cataract Surgery Different from Traditional Cataract Surgery?

In traditional cataract surgery, incisions in the cornea are made using handheld blades to access the cataract.  The Catalys Precision Laser System offers tailored treatment to each individual’s eye. With Catalys, your surgeon can make the incisions with exceptional precision and accuracy, creating a circular opening with the exact intended size, shape and location using the precision of the laser.

The laser can also be used to break up and soften the hard cataract. Softening the lens with the Catalys laser enables your surgeon to then remove the cataract more gently and with significantly less ultrasound energy than is used in traditional manual cataract surgery. This gentle, low energy approach reduces inflammation and helps speed visual recovery.

Depending on your pre-operative vision and desired visual results, your surgeon can recommend a tailored treatment plan that could include creating ultra-precise laser incisions in the cornea and a specific lens implant type (e.g. Multifocal lens for near and far vision). This tailored treatment may reduce your need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery!
