ORA Guided Cataract Surgery

ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis)

ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis) is a revolutionary new option used to gather data during cataract surgery to optimize postoperative visual outcomes. The ORA System assists the surgeon to select intraocular lenses (IOLs) that will match a patient’s precise needs regarding lens power, magnitude and axis of astigmatism, and aphakic and pseudophakic measurements. Whether the patient has had LASIK or has astigmatism, an ORA-guided cataract procedure provides the security of knowing they can have the best possible outcome, and reduce the chance of needing an additional procedure.

How Does ORA Work?

During cataract surgery, the cloudy, natural lens is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens implant, or IOL. The ORA is attached to the surgical microscope and, utilizing no-contact intraoperative wavefront aberrometry, performs nearly 40 instantaneous calculations to measure the refractive power of the eye. This real-time calculation enables the surgeon to perform custom refractive cataract surgery to ensure proper implant power, IOL placement, and/or determination of the magnitude and direction of astigmatism.

Who Is a Candidate for ORA?

The ORA System technology is beneficial to all patients, but can be especially helpful to patients who have had previous refractive surgery such as LASIK, PRK, or RK, extreme near or far-sightedness, or higher amounts of astigmatism. The ability to measure, refine and affirm outcomes during the actual surgical process allows the surgeon to make real-time surgical course modifications with on-demand measurements of the most critical components of cataract care to enhance outcomes and reduce potential post-op complications.

When combining the benefits of ORA with Multifocal or Accommodating cataract lens implant technology, patients today are experiencing a higher quality of post-operative vision than at any other time in history. Your BVA doctor will determine the treatment plan best suited for the visual outcome you desire, depending on the vision correction option you choose for your cataract surgery.
