ReSTOR ® IOL Lenses

Offices in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman, Ada, Elk City, Muskogee and throughout Oklahoma

There's now a reprieve from reading glasses and contact lenses. If you've had a cataract procedure, or if you've reached that age when close-up vision has become a bit blurry, there's an impressive new option. It's a type of IOL, intraocular lens, called the ReSTOR ® Lens, and in March, 2005 it was approved by the FDA for cataract and presbyopia patients.

In the studies which the FDA referred to in giving approval, it was found that 80% of people who received ReSTOR ® lenses had no need of glasses at all after their cataract surgery.

Cataracts

A cataract is a cloudiness in the lens which scatters light instead of focusing it. The eye's natural lens is made up mostly of water and protein, with the protein arranged so as to allow light through. As we age, the protein molecules can start clumping together, and once this clumping starts, it does not reverse itself. There's no agreement on exactly what causes a cataract, although a great deal is known about them.

To restore vision, a lens with a cataract must be replaced with an IOL.

How does the ReSTOR ® lens work?

This lens is made with a series of tiny steps, or levels, each of which bends light rays at different angles. They run in concentric circles around the center of the lens. Depending on how wide the pupil is at any given moment, and how much light it's admitting into the eye, different levels on the ReSTOR ® lens come into play, and between them, they allow clear vision at all distances.

The height of each step around the lens gradually decreases towards the periphery of the lens and this is known as apodization. This means that there are no demarcation lines between different distances, as there are in bifocals. There's a smooth transition from near, to intermediate, to distant focal points. Near vision is considered to be anything closer than 16 inches from the eyes. Intermediate distance is between 16 inches and seven feet away, and far distance is seven feet or further from the eyes.

The ReSTOR ® lens is manufactured by Alcon Surgical, and is made of a special material known as AcrySof ®. The technology has been used in telescopes and microscopes for many years but Alcon has now patented it for use in IOLs.

If you'd like freedom from readings glasses, bifocals or contact lenses, perhaps an IOL would be a great solution. Call or email us to arrange for a consultation. We can examine your vision and make a determination as to how best to improve it with an IOL.
